When couples first start planning a Washington elopement, sunrise usually feels optional, potentially intimidating. Early alarms, cold mornings, fog uncertainty. It’s easy to assume sunset is the obvious choice.
But after planning and photographing elopements all across Washington, here’s the honest truth:
Sunrise matters here more than almost anywhere else.
Not because it’s trendy but because of how Washington landscapes, weather, and access actually work.

Best Time Of Day To Elope In Washington for the Views
In Washington, visibility can shift dramatically throughout the day. Fog rolls in. Clouds build. Wind picks up. What looks clear at 7am can feel completely different by noon.
Sunrise gives you the best chance of seeing the landscape before conditions change. Trust me on this one I love the fog and mist but let’s give us the chance to have both in your gallery if there is a chance for it.
Mountain views are often clearest early. Fog tends to sit low and lift slowly. Light is softer and more forgiving. You’re working with the environment instead of racing it.
This doesn’t mean sunrise guarantees perfect views, truly nothing in Washington does, but the goal is to stack the odds in your favor.
Sunrise Means Fewer Crowds (Especially in Washington)
Crowds are one of the biggest stressors couples don’t anticipate until it’s too late.
Popular Washington locations, national parks, trailheads, overlooks, they can (and will) fill quickly, especially between late morning and early evening. Parking gets tight. Noise increases. Privacy disappears.
Sunrise changes that completely.
Early mornings offer quieter trails, empty viewpoints, and space to be present without feeling rushed or watched. If intimacy matters to you, sunrise isn’t just about light it’s about the experience I want you to have.
Sunrise Creates More Flexible Elopement Timelines
One of the biggest advantages of sunrise elopements in Washington is timeline flexibility.
Starting early gives you room to:
- Build in weather buffers
- Move slowly without racing daylight
- Adapt if conditions shift
- Have two golden hours (Sunrise AND sunset)
- Have two blue hours, too!
- Take a nap during the day between sunrise ceremony and sunset portraits
- Alone time away from guests
Instead of cramming everything into a tight evening window, sunrise allows the day to unfold naturally. You’re not watching the clock, you’re responding to what the day gives you.
Plus it’s so much easier to navigate getting off a mountain during the day than racing to the parking lot at night. (Not that we won’t be prepared with headlights, but let’s think of everything!)
That flexibility is huge in a place where conditions can change quickly.
Sunrise vs Sunset in Washington
Sunset elopements can be beautiful, but in Washington, they come with tradeoffs.
Sunset often means:
- Heavier crowds
- Less predictable visibility
- Tighter timelines
- More pressure to “make it work”
- The day is over, sun is set, if things get behind
Sunrise isn’t about being hardcore or adventurous for the sake of it. It’s about choosing the option that gives you more calm, more privacy, and more margin for error.
Neither is wrong, but they create very different experiences and different photos because the light will be facing different ways.
Alpenglow at sunrise vs sunset
Alpenglow: The red & pink hues you see right around sunset or sunrise on the peaks of the mountain. Also known as alpine glow.
So when the sun rises you will see this on the opposite side mountains and when the sun sets vs versa. Why does this matter? Well say the view is a certain direction like the ocean. Washington’s ocean is on the west side which means it will look widely different at different times of the day. You can position a sunset and the ocean behind you during sunset, while during sunrise you will have more of that glow behind you with direct light on you.
When Sunrise Might Not Be the Right Choice
Sunrise isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay.
If early mornings feel stressful, if accessibility is limited, or if cold temperatures would take away from your experience, a sunrise elopement may not be the best fit. Comfort matters just as much as scenery.
This is why planning matters. Sunrise works best when it aligns with you, not just the location.
The goal of course is gorgeous images, so we can plan for different portraits at a sunset time so you can still sleep in, be with your partner & people, then plan a separate day so nothing feels like a compromise.
My Honest Take on Sunrise Elopements in Washington
Some of the calmest, most meaningful elopements I’ve photographed in Washington happened at sunrise. There is this calm stillness in the air when you’re waking up with the sun and animals. Like when it snows and everything feels quiet. It’s such an adrenaline rush.
Plus feeling like your first in line at a parking lot, getting to see the first light, the headlamps, the extra leggings, the giddy breakfast we can pack and have right after your vows.
It’s intentional when we can plan at sunrise. Plus you will love your gallery having such a wide variety of light and movement.
How this Fits Into a Well-Planned Washington Elopement
When sunrise is part of the plan, everything else becomes easier. Your timeline is able to stay flexible, so we can easily pivot or stay in one area longer if you’re having a ton of fun. We can also change on the fly if you want to go get coffee or lunch between locations because the rest of the world is still waking up and we already started.
Then if the weather does start to change, no worries. We can pack extra umbrellas and a poncho and lean into it. Extra bonus if the weather does go rainy usually the means smaller crowds.
That’s why sunrise often plays a role in the elopements I design, not as a rule, but as a tool to have a really good experience.
