Elopement Photographer: One Type you need to Hire

If you’ve been lurking in Facebook groups or Reddit threads asking about elopement photographers, you’ve probably seen it all. But here’s the deal: not every elopement photographer offers the same kind of experience and that’s kind of the point.

This post breaks down the different types of elopement photographers (yep, there are actual types), so you can find one who matches your vibe. I’m an adventure elopement photographer based in Washington State, but I’ll show you the whole spread so you can spot the red flags and the right fits.

I’m for the couples who want more than a courthouse, and possibly wear their heart on their sleeve. Because I don’t want to work with couples who say things like “we just need one photo” or “doesn’t charge an arm or a leg” (trust me that phrase is triggering among service providers).

You’re not high-maintenance, you just know what you want

Elopement Photographer Types

Let’s be real: saying you want an “elopement photographer” is like saying you want pizza. Cool, but what kind? (Please don’t say pineapple lolol) Because not all elopements (or photographers) are the same. Some folks want a five-minute ceremony at city hall and a selfie. Others want to backpack into the North Cascades with vows, whiskey, and wool socks.

If you’re the kind of couple who actually wants an experience—not just a pretty pic for Instagram—this guide’s for you. Here’s how to spot the different types of elopement photographers (and how to know if we’d vibe).

Adventure Elopement Photographer (That’s what I am!)

Adventure Elopements are their own little niche in the elopement world. (Because not everyone who wants to elope wants to hike and that’s a-okay!!)

This is for couples who want their day to feel like them. Maybe that means hiking to a mountaintop, riding a gondola, or kayaking to their ceremony spot. As an adventure elopement photographer, I don’t just show up, I help you plan the whole experience.

Timeline, location, logistics, weather backup, we co-create a day that reflects your relationship.

You’ll usually get:
– One to two even THREE days of coverage
– Full planning support
– Permit and location guidance
– Personalized timeline
– Candid storytelling images in epic locations
– Film, digital, content creation
– Heirloom Albums, Prints

1-2 Hour Elopement Photographer (Not my thing, but it is for some)

Think courthouse elopements or quick “I do’s” in a local park. These elopement photographers typically shoot several ceremonies a week and focus on short, sweet coverage.

It’s perfect for couples who:
– Just want to legally marry with a few photos
– Don’t care about custom planning
– Are on a tight timeline or budget

(Totally valid—just not what I offer.)

Urban Elopement Photographer

City lovers, this one’s for you. These elopement photographers know every hidden rooftop, graffiti alley, and chic hotel lobby. They’re experts at navigating subways, timing golden hour through skylines, and making downtown portraits feel cinematic.

Best for:
– Couples eloping in NYC, Seattle, Chicago, etc.
– Those who want that “sex and the city meets soulmates” energy
– Fast-paced, editorial vibes

Pop Up Elopement Photographer

These are like mini weddings. They’re curated, quick, and bundled. Often offered at resorts or by collectives, pop-up elopement photographers are part of a team that includes a planner, officiant, florist, etc. It’s a plug-and-play model that still feels elevated.

You’ll likely see:
– Short coverage (1–4 hours)
– Pre-picked dates and locations
– Styled set-ups or micro-venues
– Less customization but more ease

What makes 2026 Elopements different than years past?

Luxury is in. Couples are choosing to make their elopement a once-in-a-lifetime experience, not just a “skip-the-wedding” moment. Helicopter vows, sunrise paddle board ceremonies, snowboarding in wedding gear? Yes, please.

As an elopement photographer in 2026, I’m seeing more:
– High-end lodging in remote places
– Multi-day elopement experiences
– Custom vow books, private chefs, and styled picnics
Actually living the dream (not just staging it)

Favorite elopement moments of years past

My personal favorite things I’ve photographed I feel like have so much to do with the people who were in the photos. I love my clients something fierce, and they all want different moments recorded.

Favorites I’ll never stop thinking about:
– Going ice skating with my couple, full camera gear on the ice
– Couple who brought their 6 month old baby in tow, he was smiling and laughing all day
– Helicopter tour on a glacier in Alaska. These things are melting, and I was there before it did

That’s the thing. The best moments are what you make of them. My job as your elopement photographer is to catch them.
