Do You Need a Permit to Elope at Garden of the Gods?

Short answer? Usually no, but there’s still a little paperwork involved.

If you’re planning a simple elopement with fewer than 25 people (including your photographer), Garden of the Gods allows ceremonies at designated sites without a formal permit or fee. That’s one of the best parts of this location—it’s accessible and stress-free.

That said, you do need to submit a reservation form to let the city know when and where you’ll be holding your ceremony. It’s quick, easy, and helps avoid double-booking popular spots.

Planning something bigger or more elaborate?
If you want to bring in chairs, arches, florals, or any kind of setup, you’ll need to go through the city’s permit process and get approval in advance.

Need help figuring out which category your day fits into? That’s what I’m here for—permits, plans, timelines… it’s all part of how I help make your elopement easy.

Not for small ceremonies.

  • Garden of the Gods allows free elopements at designated sites for groups under 25
  • You do need to submit a form to reserve your spot
  • Larger setups (chairs, arches, etc.) require a permit and additional approval

Planning Tips if you want to Elope in Garden of the Gods

This iconic Colorado Springs spot is popular for a reason—those red rock formations are stunning. But with its beauty comes a bit of planning to make sure your elopement feels calm, easy, and crowd-free.

Here’s what to know before you go:

  • The park is free and open year-round
No permit fees here, which is rare! Just remember, even though it’s free, it’s still a protected public space—so treat it with care.
  • Arrive early to beat the rush
Parking lots fill up fast, especially on weekends or in summer. Sunrise ceremonies or weekday mornings are your best bet for a little privacy.
  • No amplified sound, decorations, or confetti
Garden of the Gods has strict rules to keep the landscape clean and sacred. That means no arches, signs, or anything that leaves a trace.
  • Pack water and wear sunscreen—even in winter
The sun reflects off the rock and elevation sneaks up on you. Hydrate and protect your skin, even if it feels cool outside.
  • Always have a weather backup
Colorado weather changes on a dime. Storm clouds, surprise wind, even snow flurries in spring—it’s all part of the experience. Having a nearby Plan B spot or backup timing helps you stay stress-free.

Garden of the Gods is one of the most accessible and photo-friendly places to elope in Colorado—but the details matter. A little prep = a much smoother, more beautiful day.

Leave No Trace Reminders

This park might be more accessible than some, but it’s still delicate. The red rock formations and surrounding ecosystem have been around long before us—and it’s our job to make sure they’re still here long after your elopement day.

Keep it gorgeous with these simple but important reminders:

  • Stick to trails and designated areas
The sandstone and soil here are fragile. Even a few steps off-trail can do lasting damage to the landscape.
  • Don’t climb or carve into the rocks
It might seem obvious, but etching names or scrambling off-route isn’t just damaging—it’s illegal.
  • Pack out every. single. thing.
That includes bouquet bits, snack wrappers, tissues, food scraps—everything. If you brought it in, it leaves with you.
  • Respect the wildlife
That includes the squirrels who’ll try to photobomb and steal your snacks. Don’t feed them, don’t chase them, just let them do their thing.

A low-impact elopement doesn’t mean less magic—it means more meaning. Let’s keep Garden of the Gods just as wild and wonderful for the next couple who shows up in love.
