What to wear to your Mountain Engagement Session if you want to feel part of the landscape.

If you’re planning a session in the mountains you might wonder what colors will photograph good, and others that are kinda fighting with the landscape.

While I personally tell my clients to always choose comfort, and make sure you have good walking shoes, you are more than welcome to bring an extra pair or outfit on our hike to change into!

What to wear to your Mountain Engagement Session

What colors look amazing in the mountains

I love any shade of earthy tones. When you have that linen, or rust, it just feels cohesive along the landscapes.

Earth tones
Denim blue
Forest Greens
Linen and warm whites
Warm pinks

I think if you could take the photo of the landscape and pull complimentary shades of what you see in that mountain photo that is truly your best bet.

If you want more monochrome, wear forest green

If you want to feel natural but stand out among the path I’d lean towards warm white, linen, or deep yellows.

What Colors I tend to avoid during mountain sessions

There are certain shades of light blue that will look very close to sky blue at certain times, which in turn can fight with the color of the mountains. This can make your outfit appear more neon, or even wash out your skin tones while in the mountain landscape.

But again these are just helpful ideas, you don’t have to avoid these completely!

I’d avoid lighter pastel hues of pinks + blues.

Light or sky blue
Greys

Why I recommend earthy colors for mountain engagement sessions

I don’t want to tell my clients they have to dress a certain way, especially if that means they’d be uncomfortable. My goal is to always point you in the direction of what would lean into the location of your session, and keep the focus on that moment that helps it feel right.

The right outfit can truly change the feel of a photo so if I can help with colors that look really good in that landscape I’m for sure going to recommend them!

Flowy or fitted? What outfit looks best?

I’m team either, but just make them both layered!

If you want a more hiking or casual fit add on a hat, a scarf, or cardigan. Layer with chunky socks. That way you’re more than just a top and pant combo, you add visual interest with multiple layers.

Same applies for flowy but you could have a blanket, a picnic basket, or chunky leg warmers.
